In January 1989, I arrived in New York from Switzerland with one suitcase and a visa for a semester at The New School University. It's a longish story, but somehow, I never made it back "home".
35 years later, I'm an American citizen and a New York film industry veteran. After years of shooting in the streets of New York, I know my way around the city like few others do. And at the same time I'm a perpetual newcomer because the city changes faster than most people change their socks.
It seems like an unlikely combination, but today, I share my time between New York and La Punt, which are opposites that create a perfect world of extremes. I work as a digital content creator and landscape photographer, both of which allow me to live anywhere in the world. I'm a digital nomad with dog.
This show, "Swiss by Design, Savvy by New York" is an homage to MY New York and an acknowledgment of my family's roots, which lie in La Punt.
As a landscape photographer, I had to find new ways to visualize New York. I wanted to strike a balance between the recognizable features of New York, my neighborhood of 22 years in Central Harlem, and my "playground" in Central Park. It was fun to translate how I photograph nature to my own habitat in a city of over eight million people.
New York is HUGE, and there are thousands of stories to tell about all facets of life here - from its people and their cultures, to the food, the subway system, housing, and how business is being conducted.
The following stories are short glimpses into a New Yorker's life, with a dash of hyperbole.

Im Januar 1989 kam ich mit einem Koffer und einem Visum für ein Semester an der New School Universität aus der Schweiz in New York an. Die ganze Geschichte ist etwas langfädig, aber irgendwie habe ich es geschafft, 35 Jahre später immer noch in New York zu sein.
Heute bin ich Amerikanerin und ehemalige Filmproduzentin. Jahrzehntelang habe ich in den Strassen von New York gedreht und kenne die Stadt wie die Innentasche meines Mantels. Und gleichzeitig fühle ich mich immer wieder wie eine Fremde, weil die Stadt sich schneller ändert, als die meisten Leute Ihre Socken wechseln.
Seit ein paar Jahren verbringe ich einen Teil des Jahres in La Punt und den Rest in New York - die beiden grundverschiedenen Orte sind eine unwiderstehliche Kombination. Ich arbeite als «Digital Content Creator», d.h. meine Firma hilft Kleinunternehmen mit ihrer Präsenz auf LinkedIn, um Klienten zu finden.
Ausserdem bin ich als Landschaftsfotografin tätig. Somit kann ich als digitale Nomadin mit Hund völlig ortsunabhängig arbeiten.
Diese Ausstellung ist eine Huldigung an MEIN New York und würdigt gleichzeitig meine Schweizer Wurzeln. Meine Familie ist aus La Punt. Somit ist auch der Titel der Ausstellung entstanden: «Swiss by Design, Savvy by New York» - also quasi «Made in Switzerland» und savvy übersetzt sich am besten als Klugheit oder Schläue.
Als Landschaftsfotografin musste ich erst einmal eine neue Bildsprache finden, um New York gerecht zu werden. Ich wollte eine Balance zwischen den Wahrzeichen New Yorks und Harlem - meiner Wahlheimat seit 22 Jahren - sowie meiner Freizeitwiese, dem Central Park, schaffen.
Es hat Spass gemacht, Wege zu finden, meine Landschaftsfotografie auf eine Weltstadt mit 8 Millionen Einwohnern zu übertragen.
Zu jedem Bild in dieser Ausstellung erzähle ich Euch eine Kurzgeschichte über New York.
New York ist eine riesige Stadt und nach 35 Jahren hat man unendliche Geschichten zu erzählen, von der Subway, Unterkünften, Freundschaften, Kultur, Gerichten, Traditionen und der allgemeinen Lebensweise der Amerikaner. Meine zehn Geschichten sind kurze Anekdoten und Hyperbeln, die amüsieren und einen kleinen Einblick geben sollen.
